Art Deco Diamond Plaque Brooch, France, centering an old European-cut diamond weighing approx. 1.85 cts., and seventy-six old mine-cut diamonds, approx. total wt. 18.61 cts., platinum and 18kt gold mount, millegrain accents, 3 x 1 1/16 in., no. 021360, guarantee stamps.
Provenance: Purchased in the 1920s by the first United States Ambassador to Finland, Alexander Richardson Magruder, for his wife Elinor Palmer Magruder. Magruder was born in the Cote D'Azur, France, and was in the Foreign Service for most of his life as a career diplomat. While he and Elinor owned a home that is now a National Park Service Property in Frederick County, Maryland, it was their homes in Europe that mattered to them the most and where they entertained so graciously as members of the State Department.
