The American Indian & Ethnographic Art auction to be held by Skinner Inc. on November 9 in Boston is anchored by property from a number of private collections, much of which has not been seen in the market for generations. Offerings include a large collection of Polynesian and Melanesian weapons from a Philadelphia collection. A collection of African sculpture from a Cambridge collection including pieces from the Dogon people in Mali, and from the Congo. As well as an important neck rest from South Africa. Native American artifacts include a Plains Indian collection from New York, including pipe tomahawks, catlinite pipes and beadwork. Including a rare central Plains catlinite war club inlaid with pewter. A rare Mi’kmaq tea cozy and a mid-19th century moose skin coat from the Huron people of Canada. There will also be a large collection of Southwest pottery, both historic and contemporary. Together with a group of Navajo textiles and silver and turquoise jewelry. As well as a strong selection of Northwest Coast and pre-historic Eskimo artifacts from a Vermont and Santa Fe collection.
