Description:
Ulises Jiménez Obregón (Costa Rican, b. 1953)
Baikal. Unsigned, identified "ULISES JIMENEZ/COSTA RICA" on a presentation plaque, identified, titled, and dated "...2004" on the artist's label affixed to the underside of the plinth. Guanacaste wood, height 12 3/4 in., on a wood plinth. Condition: Shallow abrasion u.l. on the reverse, minor dust and dirt.
N.B. The Guanacaste tree (Enterolobium cyclocarpum) is the national tree of Costa Rica. Ulises Jiménez Obregón writes that while all his sculpture is created from wood, he has never cut a tree to make it. Instead he selects wood that has been left unused by saw mills in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, where unfortunately he finds there is a lot of wasted material. Born on a farm in La Mansión de Nicoya, Obregón has been carving wood since he was a child, when he began producing his own wood toys.
We would like to thank the artist for his kind assistance cataloging this lot.
