Description:
Jonathan Orne Johnson "J.O.J." Frost (Massachusetts, 1852-1928)
Market Square at the Old Town House, Marblehead
Unsigned.
Oil on cardboard, 21 x 33 in., in likely original molded "driftwood"-style frame.
Condition: Good.
Literature: This painting is illustrated, titled "Early Days of Marblehead," and briefly discussed in a 1971 Parke-Bernet Galleries auction catalog, pp. xv and 34, and its location is listed as "Whereabouts unknown." It appears to be the larger part of a two-part composition done on two separate pieces of board. The smaller part of the composition was sold at the 1971 auction.
Note: In this bustling street scene featuring figures, a horse and buggy, a cart advertising "PIGS FOR SALE," and more than a dozen commercial and residential buildings (two of which fly American flags),Frost includes an uncommon number of details. In particular, inscriptions on the commercial building at lower left indicate the many establishments included within - an auction room, a bowling alley, a bar room, a tailor, an ice cream store, and a YMCA school.
Estimate $15,000-25,000
