Colonel Samuel Thaxter Gold and Enamel Mourning Ring, America, c. 1740, the gold ring with with coffin shaped stone and tiny pen and ink image of a skeleton behind, flanked by single smaller stones, the exterior of the band with black enamel and gilt lettering "S:THAXTER ESQ:O.B. 13:NOV 1740:AE:76," dia. 13/16 in.
Provenance: By direct descent from Benjamin Lincoln to the consignor, Hingham, Massachusetts.
Note: Colonel Samuel Thaxter (1665-1740) was a prominent citizen of Hingham, Massachusetts, being a member of the commission that settled the boundary between Massachusetts and Rhode Island in 1719, and commander of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company in 1728. He was the grandfather of Major General Benjamin Lincoln.
