U.S. Model 1860 Officer's Light Cavalry Saber Identified to Captain Samuel H. Libby, 2nd Maine Cavalry Veteran Volunteers, c. 1863-65, gilt brass hilt with ornate foliate designs and an eagle on the top of the counterguard, wire-wrapped shagreen grip, steel blade marked on the ricasso "COLLINS & CO./HARTFORD/CONN," blade inscribed with an eagle, "U.S.," and foliate designs, silver plated steel scabbard with gilt-brass fittings and inscribed "Presented to/Capt. Saml H. Libby/Co. L 2d Maine Cav. Vet. Vols./by the Members of the Company," blade lg. 34 1/2, overall lg. 41 in.

Note: Captain Samuel Libby was a member of the 27th Maine Volunteer Infantry. He mustered out on July 17, 1863, and reenlisted in the 2nd Maine Cavalry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for extending his service to defend Washington from Confederate attack during the Gettysburg campaign.

In overall very good to find condition with some very light spotting on the blade and some silver plate missing on the scabbard.
