Joab Hapgood Target Rifle, c. 1840s, .44 caliber, figured maple stock with brass fittings, brass patch box and a German silver inlays, percussion back lock, set triggers, octagonal barrel marked "J. HAPGOOD/SHREWSBURY," with a wooden ramrod, barrel lg. 32 7/8, overall lg. 49 1/2 in.
Note: Captain Joab Hapgood (1804-1890),from Boston and Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, built guns between 1826 and 1864.
