U.S. Model 1861 Percussion Rifle Musket Identified to Private Francis E. Ruff, 26th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, c. 1864, .58 caliber, walnut stock with light cartouche marks and "F. RUFF" carved on the left side of the butt, steel fittings, lock marked "U.S./PROVIDENCE TOOL CO./PROVIDENCE RI" and "1864" on the tail, breech marked "1864" with proof marks, barrel lg. 40, overall lg. 56 in.
Provenance: The collection of Ron Tunison.
Note: Private Francis Ruff enlisted in Company B, 26th Illinois Infantry, on August 15, 1861, he reenlisted in Company I on January 1, 1864, and was mustered out of service on July 20, 1865.
