Frederick Augustus Heisely Engineer's Level, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, c. 1840, original lacquered brass instrument with a 17 1/2-in. scope, spirit level below, horizontal bar engraved "F.A. Heisely/Pittsburgh," housed in an orange-painted wooden fitted box.
Note: Frederick was first listed in the Pittsburgh directory in 1837 advertising as a maker of surveyor's compasses, clocks, and watches. (See The Makers of Surveying Instruments in America Since 1700, Charles E. Smart, 1967.)
