William E. Stieren Vernier Transit, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, mid-19th century, 10-in. scope with spirit level below mounted to "A"-frame supports, 5-in. dia. engraved silvered dial reading "Wm. E. Stieren/Maker/Pittsburgh, Pa./154," with opposing horizontal verniers and fine adjustment screw, four-screw leveling base, housed in its original dovetailed case.
