United States Coast Survey No. 41 Alidade, first quarter 20th century, lacquered brass high-post alidade with a 15-in. scope, vertical arc calibrated 30-0-30 with vernier, circular spirit level mounted to the 22-in. plate marked "U.S.C.S. No. 41," housed in its original fitted box with stenciling.
Note: The agency began in 1807 as the Coast Survey and became the Coast and Geodetic Survey around 1878.
