Julius Hanks Surveyor's Plain and Vernier Compasses, Troy, New York, c. 1808-34, plain compass with a 6 1/2-in. dia. engraved silvered dial marked "J. Hanks/Troy," fleur-de-lis representing north, housed in an associated mahogany box with Gurley paper label; vernier compass lacking one sight vane and levels, lg. 15 1/2 in.
Note: This plain example is unusual as it does not have the usual spirit levels.
