Josef Albers (German/American, 1888-1976)

The Portfolio Homage to the Square, 1962, edition of 250, published by Ives-Sillman, New Haven (Danilowitz, 156). Identified and numbered "23" in ink on the colophon, each print with embossed plate number l.r. Ten color screenprints on paper, sheet sizes 16 7/8 x 16 7/8 in. (42.8 x 42.8 cm),each print with original folder and all presented in original portfolio and slipcase.
Condition: Very subtle toning to edges of sheets, minor handling crease to several of the folders.

N.B. The original box used to ship the portfolio from the publisher accompanies the lot.

Each print is presented in its own paper folder printed with the title on the recto. Image ghosting to a few pages opposite of the prints. Scattered smudges ranging from pale to extremely pale near perimeter of most folders on recto and few folders on verso. Folder 1: recto with 1/8 inch faint dark scratch; Colophon page: few extremely minor accretions; Wide Light Folder: recto with one pinprick accretion near c.l.; Wide Light: one minor accretion to l.l. quadrant of grey square and one pinprick accretion to u.r. edge of center-most square; Thaw Folder: few extremely minor scattered accretions to inside on left page, recto and verso l.r. corners with minor creasing; Thaw: verso with few pinprick accretions; Tenuous: scattered minor pinprick accretions, few pinprick accretions to image; Equivocal Folder: few minor pinprick accretions, 1/2 inch faint red rub to l.c. edge; Patina Folder: recto with few faint pinprick accretions to l.c. edge; Patina: few faint extremely minor narrow diagonal rubs to u. l. quadrant approximately 4-5 inches (no abrading to color); Full Folder: recto with one pinprick fox mark to l.l. corner, faint droplet stain to l.r. corner; Full: few extremely faint pinprick accretions to l.l., extremely faint smudge to left edge at center, faint toning to edges; Shielded: pale toning towards left edge, few minor accretions to u.l. quadrant, one narrow diagonal rub measuring approximately 10 inches to image (no abrading to color),few minor accretions to verso; Aura: two extremely faint rubs to u.l. within image, faint pinpricks of brown pigment to u.l. edge just outside of image; Reserved folder: recto with few scattered pinprick accretions, inside on left page with few minor accretions, verso with minor accretion to u.r. and very small handling creases to c.r. edge, visible in slanted light; Reserved: minor accretion to u.l. quadrant, two faint horizontal rubs approximately 3 inches in length to center green square, few scattered minor pinprick accretions; Joy Folder: verso with one yellowish smudge measuring approximately 3/4 inch to l.l. quadrant near edge; Joy: few extremely minor scattered accretions within image, few very small rubs ranging in measurement from 1/4-1/2 inch scattered within image (no abrading to color); Portfolio: minor discoloration to spine.
