Description:
Anthony Thieme (American, 1888-1954)
Rolling Surf
Signed "AThieme" l.l., with a label from J.J. Gillespie Company Fine Art Galleries, Pittsburgh, affixed to the frame backing.
Oil on canvas, 20 x 24 in. (50.5 x 60.5 cm),framed.
Condition: Multiple small losses in the rocks, fine craquelure, varnish discoloration, minor surface grime.
Estimate $1,000-1,500
The frame backing was not removed during cataloging since it looked original and we did not want to disturb it.
The craquelure with losses, which are found only in the brown pigment, seems raised, and there is continued potential for flaking there. Otherwise, the composition has areas of rich impasto, especially in the frothy waves, that are intact.
Frame seems period and measures 23 1/3 x 27 1/2 x 2 1/4 inches.
