Vessel Returning from Surinam
Signed and indistinctly inscribed or dated "F.H. Lane..." l.r., with a faint "FH" just above and to the left of the signature, identified on a typed label affixed to the stretcher.
Oil on canvas, 18 x 30 1/4 in. (45.5 x 76.5 cm),framed.
Condition: Minor retouch to fill craquelure in sky and stretcher bar mark along right vertical edge, signature reinforced, craquelure, minor surface grime.

Provenance: Probably Dr. Greenleaf, Gloucester, Massachusetts; to his daughter Harriet Greenleaf Whitman; to the parents of the current owner, by family descent.

When the work was examined during cataloging, a small paper fragment torn from a pocket calendar was found behind stretcher with a pencil inscription, "Mrs. John Wald (?),Main Street, Marston Mills, bought Fitz Hugh Lane, 11/2/58." The reference is open to conjecture and does not apply to the provenance of the work at hand. However, in theory, it might possibly refer to the purchaser of a companion painting, Vessel Heading to Surinam. It is hoped that further research undertaken for the catalogue raisonné might some day yield an answer.

The preliminary opinion from the Lane catalogue raisonné was that this painting likely dates from the late 1840s.

Framed dimensions are 25 x 36 3/4 in.

Small areas of transfer of gilding from frame to l.l. corner.
