Description:

George Chinnery (British, 1774-1852)

Two Framed Sketches: Study of a Man's Hands Holding a Bowl and Chopsticks and A Chinese Mother and Child
Hands inscribed in shorthand and dated "11.40" and "31.40" l.c., Mother inscribed in shorthand u.r., both identified on labels from Spink Gallery, London, affixed to the frame backing.
Pencil and ink on paper, sizes to 4 1/16 x 6 3/16 in. (10.3 x 15.7 cm).
Condition: Mother with creasing, possible small tears to u.r. corner, and with a thin edge of paper tape along top and right sides, the Spink label states that Mother is a double-sided work with sketches of a sampan and figures on the reverse, not examined out of frames.

N.B. Chinnery marked individual sketches such as these with his distinctive shorthand, using a cross (+) to mark those works he liked and wished to use again, and an 'X' to identify those in which he was less pleased. This common 18th-century system of shorthand had been devised by Thomas Gurney (British, 1705-1770). Chinnery was based in Macau from 1825 until his death in 1852.

The lot is accompanied by a book and exhibition catalog about the artist.
Estimate $1,500-2,500
