Study for Mary Stuart Listening to the Order of Her Execution. Signed "C. Piloty." l.l. Oil on panel, 4 1/8 x 5 3/4 in., framed. Condition: Paint and panel flaking, surface grime, varnish discoloration, gold transfer from frame to image.
N.B. The final version of the painting was completed in 1869 and subsequent engravings were produced by Doris Raad in 1877-78. Piloty was a master colorist, historical genre painter, and one of the foremost Realist painters in Bavaria. He studied at the Munich Academy and was influenced by Diego Velázquez and Paul Delaroche.
