Charles Green Shaw (American, 1892-1974)

Montage. Signed "Shaw" in ink and with printed title on a label on the reverse. Antique playing cards and mixed media on varnished board, 14 1/2 x 9 1/2 in., framed. Condition: Cockling, foxing, and toning on cards, flaking areas of adhesive on board, craqulure on board.

N.B. A journalist for publications such as Vanity Fair and The New Yorker, Shaw came to painting around his mid 30s and was a student of both Thomas Hart Benton and George Luks. He belonged to Manhattan's social elite, as his family inherited a large portion of the Woolworth fortune. He was an early champion of abstraction in America and was a founding member of the American Abstract Artists. In addition to painting, he was also interested in collage and collected antique playing cards, combining the two together to make works he called "montages."
