Kataro Shirayamadani (1865-1948) for Rookwood Pottery Vase, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1935, amphora-form with two loop handles, lavender neck faded to ivory, floral decoration, vellum glaze, stamped Rookwood mark and "XXXV S," ink signature in characters, ht. 6 in.

Note: Kataro Shirayamadani was a Japanese ceramics painter who worked for Rookwood Pottery in Cincinnati, Ohio from 1887 until 1948. Born in Tokyo, he first met Maria Longworth Nichols Storer, the founder of Rookwood Pottery, in 1886 while painting porcelain for Fujiyama in Boston. His work won a Grand Prize at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle and is in the collections of many museums.
