Carved and Painted "Mortal Combat" Lion and Snake Sculpture, Moise Potvin (1876-1948),early 20th century, the figures with finely carved features and intricately painted details, the snake coiled around the body of the lion, the lion about to strike the snake, with custom base, ht. 9, lg. 17 3/4 in.
Note: Moise Potvin was a wood carver and folk artist who worked in Rhode Island throughout the first half of the 20th century, after moving to Warwick in 1891. He also made and repaired violins, which was his principal source of income. He is perhaps most recognized for his large carving, done in 1935, depicting Franklin Delano Roosevelt's entire cabinet, house in a finely carved and embellished semicircular cabinet room.
