N.B. This small bronze was created by Harry Jackson in early 1958, only four days after he started learning to sculpt. While ruminating about the dramatic subjects Stampede and Range Burial, preparing for the Robert Coe commission, he turned to a subject with which he had firsthand experience, "a nameless hand, waiting alone in the pre-dawn cold to rope an unwilling horse to saddle and ride in the morning's work." (1) Modeling in three dimensions helped Jackson bring the figure to life and to express its deeper humanity.
