Description:

William Trost Richards (American, 1833-1905)

The Shores of Bude, Cornwall, alternatively titled Coast of Cornwall
Signed and dated "Wm. T. Richards/1885" l.l., identified on two labels (see below) affixed to the stretcher.
Oil on canvas, 28 x 44 in. (71.0 x 112.0 cm), in a Newcomb-Macklin frame.
Condition: Lined onto a wood panel, fine craquelure, pale areas along the edges of the composition suggestive of old frame abrasions/minor paint losses.

Provenance: Property from the estate of A. Margaret Bok, Rockport, Maine.

N.B. The handwritten label providing the primary title appears period. Its format suggests it to be an exhibition label, and it may be in the hand of the artist. The name "William T. Richards" is recorded on the "Artist" line, and "816 Chestnut St." appears beneath Richards's name on the line ascribed for "Owner." Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts exhibition records list that specific Philadelphia address for the artist, starting with the 1884 exhibition and continuing through 1890. No works by this particular title are listed in the compilations of exhibition records for PAFA, National Academy of Design, Art Institute of Chicago, or Boston Art Club during those years, although Richards did exhibit other Cornwall related works.

Many ships have been wrecked on the jagged reefs which fringe the base of the formidable sandstone cliffs of Bude in north Cornwall.
Estimate $20,000-40,000

There is a printed conservator's label from Hannah Mee Horner affixed to the reverse of the wood panel. The address of Philadephia is crossed out and "24 Kent Road, Upper Darby, Pa" was been added in ink. Also with a label from Newman Galleries, Philadelphia, affixed to the back of the frame.

Framed dimensions are 33 3/8 x 49 1/2 in.
