Description:

Wheeler, Jacob D. (fl. circa 1825) Trial of William and Peter C. Smith on an Indictment for a Conspiracy, to Harass and Oppress One Abraham Paul. New York: Printed for the Publisher, and Sold at the Book-Stores, 1824. First edition, octavo, pamphlet with original brown paper wrappers, in modern boards, 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 in.

In this case, on early 19th century New York publisher attempts to fraudulently undermine another, viz.: "Abraham Paul [...] a printer and publisher; prints for the Bible Society. In 1817, he published a quarto edition of a commentary on the Bible, William Smith was in employ of [Paul] when the quarto edition was publishing. [Paul] intended to publish an octavo edition; it was known in his printing-office that he was about publishing one--William Smith knew it. (Here two newspaper [advertisements] were produced.) Peter C. Smith acknowledged that he had published the advertisement in those papers; the advertisement offered the edition at half price, and represented [Paul's] edition to have stopped." The jury found the defendant not guilty.
