Marshall was a lover of Yellowstone National Park, a guide there in the 1870s and 1880s, a gold miner and prospector, an honorary (and self-proclaimed) "professor" of Yellowstone, publishing articles on his favorite topic, and also claimed to be the first person to bring children into the park. Although not technically a photographer, he purchased Joshua Crissman's large Yellowstone and Montana photo collection and marketed the views under his own copyright.
