Alken, Henry (1785-1851) Comparative Field Sports, Shooting, in Middlesex and Elsewhere. London: J. Dickinson, March 1826. Oblong large octavo, printed limp paper wrappers, illustrated with ten hand-colored prints, which begin in a serious vein and become increasingly satirical, depicting partridge, grouse, woodcock, pheasant, snipe, and duck shooting, and then the satirical prints, i.e., various shooting melees resulting in chaos and disaster, all labeled as Middlesex duck and partridge shooting, "Middlesex More Foul Shooting, or the death of a black Cock," and finally, "Middlesex Wood Shooting," wherein the huntsmen shoot a wooden sign; stab sewing breaking and loosening, covers chipped and reinforced with tape, corners thumbed, prints nicely colored, 11 x 8 in.
