Description:

Davis, Jefferson (1808-1889) Document Signed, 1 December 1844. Single leaf secretarial document authorizing Lloyd Selby to deliver the results (in triplicate) of Mississippi's presidential vote to Washington, DC, the election that resulted in Polk winning the Presidency for the democratic party in 1844, signed by Arthur Fox, R.H. Boon, Joseph W. Mathews, Joseph Bell, H. Stuart Foote, and Jefferson Davis, matted and framed, on blue paper, old folds, edges toned, small marginal nick, strong Davis signature, 9 3/4 x 7 3/4 in. [together with] engraved fundraising certificate for the Washington National Monument fund for one dollar purchased by Jefferson Davis Selby, one of Lloyd Selby's descendants, framed, 7 3/4 x 9 1/2 in.

Dr. Lloyd Selby was active in Warren County political affairs in the early 1840s, and in 1844 was Jefferson Davis's choice to take the presidential election results to Washington. Dr. Selby had settled in Warren County by 1836 and was head of a household of four by 1845. He seems, however, never to have owned much property there. In mid-1847 he moved to Holly Springs in northern Mississippi and began publication of the radical Democratic weekly, The Jacksonian, which he sold in 1851. On September 22, 1857, Selby was drowned in the Mississippi River opposite Warrenton when the skiff he was rowing was run over by a passing steamboat (New Orleans Daily Picayune, Sept. 23, 1857). (Quoted from The Papers of Jefferson Davis, Volume 2, June 1841-June 1846)
