Hugo Harttmann Vernier Compass, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, lacquered brass instrument with 6 1/2-in. dia. engraved dial reading "Hugo Harttmann/Maker/Philadelphia," blued-steel needle with needle lifter on underside, outkeeper, and dual spirit levels.
Note: Hugo Hartmann is listed as an instrument maker at 330 Noble St., Philadelphia, between 1853 and 1856. From 1857 to 1859 he is listed as an instrument maker at 63 Dock St.
