Jonas H. Phelps Vernier Compass, Westport, Connecticut, c. 1855, 7-in. silvered dial marked "J.H. Phelps/Westport, CT.," blued-steel needle with lock-down knob on underside, vernier arm stamped "2E125," with dual spirit levels.
Provenance: The collection of William H. Skerritt.
Note: According to Charles Smart, on February 1, 1852, Mr. Phelps sold his interest in the partnership between himself and Lewis E. Gurley and moved to Westport, Connecticut. The firm then became W. & L.E. Gurley.
