Jonas Horton Phelps Vernier Transit, c. 1838-45, 6 1/2-in. engraved silvered compass with fleur-de-lis representing north and reading "J.H. Phelps/Troy, N.Y." in center, silvered outer vernier scale, dual spirit levels mounted to underside and a 10-in. scope, housed in a later mahogany case, ht. 9 1/2 in.
