Description:

Carved Cherry Slant-lid Desk, Connecticut, c. 1800, the thumb-molded lid opens to an interior of drawers and compartments, above a case of four thumb-molded graduated drawers, all on carved ogee bracket feet with scrolled returns, replaced brasses, old varnished surface, (imperfections),ht. 41, wd. 36 1/4, dp. 19 in.

Provenance: According to papers included with the lot, the desk's first owner was Mrs. Margaret Loomis (1782-1882) of New Hartford, Connecticut. The desk was purchased from Margaret by Henry M. Gates of New Hartford, Connecticut, and has descended in his family to the present. A 1943 excerpt from the Hartford Courant Magazine also included in the lot tells of the settlement of New Hartford and shows an image of Mrs. Margaret Loomis and another of the Frederick Merrill House, her home and the oldest residence in New Hartford.
