Description:

George Lafayette Clough (New York, 1824-1901)

"Springside," the Summer Home of the John Newcomb Knapp Family on Owasco Lake, Near Auburn, New York
Signed "G.L. Clough" l.c.
Oil on canvas, 27 1/2 x 42 in., framed.
Condition: Two patched repairs with associated inpainting.

Note: "Springside" was first the name of a boys boarding school on the site of the Waring Farm on the shores of Owasco Lake, New York, which began to fail in the late 1850s. The site experienced a period of vacancy until the later 1860s, during which time legend grew of the house's use as part of the Underground Railroad. In 1867 it was sold to John Newcomb Knapp (the subject of lot 116 in this sale),a successful lawyer, banker, and statesman in New York State, who kept the name Springside for his summer homestead. The artist of the present work, George Lafayette Clough, completed a good many views of Owasco Lake in the late 19th century, and this work may have been commissioned by Knapp himself.
Estimate $6,000-8,000

Two patches on reverse - one 3 x 9 in. running vertical to the left of sailboat at left center, the other 3 1/2 in. square to upper right of house at right center. Both apparently are there to address tears and with associated inpainting, but the work is very well done. No evidence of any further significant repair or retouch.
