Country Americana
Description:
Chippendale Shell-carved Cherry High Chest, Connecticut, 18th century, ht. 71, wd. 37 1/2, dp. 20 1/4 in.
Provenance: Malcolm Norton, 1916, Leffingwell Museum House, Norwich, Connecticut.
Estimate $2,000-4,000
high chest has been refinished, legs and knee terminals completely restored and pieced, splits to the sides, strip of loss to one side, 6-inch patch to the other, but the carving appears original. As for the legs themselves, there is a photo on the reverse of the piece showing them having been fashioned into a footstool. Unfortunately we are unable to tell if the legs in the photo have the same restoration as those currently on the piece
