Lunar Orbiter 2, November 1966, The Picture of the Century. Black-and-white 7 x 9 in. photograph, without printed information on verso, with handwritten descriptive notes in Dutch on the back, called by Life magazine, "The Picture of the Century." 'On first seeing this oblique view of the crater Copernicus,' noted Oran W. Nicks from the NASA Office of Space Science and Applications, 'I was awed by the sudden realization that this prominent lunar feature I have often viewed by telescope is a landscape of real mountains and valleys, obviously fashioned by tremendous forces of nature' (Cortright, p. 88).
