Description:

Patrick Henry Bruce (American, 1881-1936)

Woman in an Interior
Signed "Bruce" l.l.
Oil on canvas, 24 1/2 x 30 in. (62.0 x 76.0 cm), framed.
Condition: Craquelure, surface grime.

Provenance: The estate of Henri C. Veit, Hadlyme, Connecticut.

N.B. After studying art in New York with William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri, Bruce moved to Paris in 1903. By 1906 he had befriended art collectors Gertrude and Leo Stein through whom he met a circle of avant-garde artists and writers that included Henri Matisse. Matisse and Bruce developed a close friendship, and Bruce was an original member of the Académie Matisse, the private art school where the French master instructed young artists from 1907 to 1911. This work exhibits the influence Matisse's strong colors and bold patterns had on Bruce. Bruce continued to be inspired by contemporary French art throughout his career, and his work gradually evolved into abstraction.
Estimate $10,000-15,000

A French customs label is affixed to the stretcher, as is an unattributed typewritten label that indicates the work was painted circa 1910 in Broussac, France, and was purchased in New York in the 1930s by Gladys Pell.
