N.B. The work at hand was reviewed via photographs by the RKD, who provided the following analysis. The painting is reminiscent of the works of Hendrik van Balen the Elder (Flemish, 1575-1632),but the overall style and manner of execution suggest that it was probably created later in the 17th century, or perhaps even in the 18th century. We would like to thank Ellis Dullaart, Curator of Dutch and Flemish Old Master Painting, RKD, for her kind assistance cataloging this lot.
Estimate $1,000-1,500
The lining as adhered with glue. There are numerous dots and dashes as well as broader strokes of retouch. The newest sits upon a thinck layer of varnish that fluoreces green, but othere retouch is just detectable beneath. THe work would benefit from cleaning. The craquelure appears stable.
