Colonial Revival Embroidered Sofa, Paoli, Pennsylvania, 1939, ht. 32 1/4, wd. 66, dp. 30 3/4 in.
Provenance: The elaborate embroidery (crewel or needlepoint) of this sofa was created by May Martin Tillinghast Roberts, Mrs. Edward Roberts II. Her initials "MMR" and the year "39" can be seen stitched into one of the cushions. The couch sat in her home, "Carnarvon," in Paoli, Pennsylvania, until the house was sold in the 1940s. Mrs. Robert's house appeared in House and Garden in August 1926 as "an example of distinctive architecture." A photograph of the sitting room appeared in the November 1922 issue.
