Unsigned, inscribed "Granchi" on a gummed label affixed to the back of the frame.
Oil on cradled panel, 21 3/4 x 18 in. (55.0 x 45.5 cm), framed.
Condition: Scattered retouch including broad brushstrokes to background and clothing and fine dots to the face, surface imperfections and alligatoring, cracks or seams in the panel that form a rectangle around the face and collar of the sitter, subtle vertical striations, surface grime.
Also with a label from the Fogg Art Museum/Loan for Examination affixed to the reverse.
Framed dimensions are 28 1/4 x 23 1/4 in.
Panel appears to have been made of several pieces of wood, the center rectangle containing the head, collar, and part of the orange sash. The outline of the center section is visible. Retouch to the sitter's nose, cheek, and left side of the forehead. Retouch also to heighten the details of the sleeve and to the background, especially where the panel sections are probably joined. Possible skinning. Abrasion across l.l. corner. Craquelure is minimal and found only in areas of thicker paint surface.
