Batak Lute, Karo Batak, northern Sumatra, Indonesia, early 20th century, ornately carved featuring animals and two guardian figures on the end of the neck and a Signa at the base of the body of the instrument, ht. 33 1/4 in.

Provenance: The Charles and Blanche Derby collection, Northampton, Massachusetts; Purchased from the Hurst Gallery, Cambridge, Massachusetts; Boston family collection, collected in the 1920s while on diplomatic posting in Indonesia.
