Description:

Jemez Buffalo Hide War Shield, c. 1850/60s, the thick slightly concave shield of single-ply fire-hardened buffalo hide, painted with native pigments to depict a horned figure rising over a central horizontal strip with black outlined white circles, above four black out-lined red vertical stripes, two larger black outlining white circles frame the red stripes, pierced with remnants of hide strap handles, dia. 23 in.
