Provenance: Private collection, Long Island, New York; Sotheby's, New York, sale no. 6245, Lot 270; Given to Martha K. Underwood (c. 1830-1890),by a student at the Indian school, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, by decent to Josephine U. Ritter, Pennsylvania, sixty-two Apache children were sent to Captain Richard Pratt's school at Carlisle, where their customs and language were forbidden.
