Attributed to Joseph Malachy Kavanagh (Irish, 1856-1918)

Head of a Woman in a Lace Cap
. Signed and dated "Kavanagh/...88..." l.l., incised "Kavanagh" on the top stretcher bar, inscribed "JH. Whitteman/...6552" in pencil on the left side stretcher bar. Oil on canvas, 16 x 12 in., in a Doll & Richards, Boston, frame. Condition: Varnish inconsistencies, possible masking varnish, probable old retouch, craquelure, scattered small paint losses, canvas painted with heavy impasto on the reverse.
