Jane Davenport (American, b. 1897)
Cirque de ParisCarved Mirror Frame. Incised monogram "JD" to the reverse l.r., with a gummed label inscribed "#24-24/Small Fish Mirror/JANE DAVENPORT" affixed to the reverse. Carved low relief wood frame with an arched top and with painted and possibly plastered background, 16 1/4 x 9 3/4 in. Condition: Scattered small losses to the background, surface grime.
Provenance: From the estate of Jane Davenport Harris di Tomassi.
N.B. The circus subject matter of this of this carved mirror reflects the influence of Alexander Calder. Jane Davenport studied with Alexander Stirling Calder at the Art Students League in New York in the early 1920s, and she befriended the young Sandy Calder. She was one of Sandy Calder's earliest supporters, and the two shared a life-long friendship. Davenport lived for many years in Laurel Hollow, Long Island, creating paintings, sculpture, and jewelry.
