Description:
Lawrence A. Lebduska (American, 1894-1966)
Fanciful Underwater Scene. Signed "Lebduska" l.r. Oil on canvas, 16 x 20 in., framed. Condition: Minor surface grime.
N.B. Lebduska was born in Baltimore but was educated in Leipzig until he was 18 years old. According to his biography on AskART, he settled back in New York in 1912 and began decorative mural painting for high-end decorators and painting on canvas for pleasure. He had no formal artistic training, but he had studied the manufacture of stained glass while in Germany. His fanciful animal scenes in bold hues were sought after in the 1930s, and the Contemporary Gallery (New York) gave him his first one-man show in 1936. This sold-out show was credited in part for inspiring Abby Aldrich Rockefeller to assemble her collection of folk art.
