Orson Byron Lowell (American, 1871-1956)

An American in Italy. Signed "Orson Lowell" l.l., inscribed and signed "For Miss Webster/this little Jerry Junior sketch/Orson Lowell" l.r. Pen and ink on paper, sight size 21 x 21 in., framed. Condition: Sheet is pieced horizontally 5 in. up from the lower edge, staining, toning, handling creases, not examined out of frame.

N.B. The label affixed to the back of the frame describes the figures as Miss Constance Wilder of Villa Rosa and "a roguish man," an illustration from Jerry Junior by Jean Webster, which chronicles a wealthy American socialite's travels through Europe. It dates the drawing to 1906. The book was originally published in 1907, then reprinted in 1909 and 1920.
