Charles Dana Gibson (American, 1867-1944)

The Gibson Girl. Signed "CD Gibson" in pencil l.c., numbered "12" beside the figure's left earlobe, identified on a printed label affixed to the frame backing paper. Pen and ink on paper/board, sight size 12 1/8 x 9 1/8 in. (oval mat window), framed. Condition: Toning, water spot or similar l.c., not examined out of frame.

N.B. The label affixed to the frame backing dates this iconic drawing to 1902 and indicates that it was first published in The Social Ladder, drawings by Charles Dana Gibson. The label quotes Gibson, "I was trying to realize on paper the real American young woman - pretty, well-groomed, high-bred, and distinctive."
