Charles Dana Gibson (American, 1867-1944)
The Questionnaire. Signed "C.D. Gibson" in ink l.l., dedicated in charcoal or similar "To Calvert Smith from his friend C.D. Gibson" along the bottom edge of the composition. Pen and ink on paper/board, sight size 18 1/8 x 14 1/8 in., framed. Condition: Minor toning.
N.B. The label affixed to the back provided the title for the drawing and indicates that it was published August 4, 1921, in LIFE Magazine. The drawing is dedicated to James Calvert Smith (American, 1878-1962),a noted illustrator and muralist, whose works were published in LIFE, Harper's and Post. He also painted murals for the New York Museum of Natural History and the Ford Foundation.
