Description:
Federal Inlaid Mahogany Card Table, attributed to Thomas Goddard, Newport, Rhode Island, c. 1808, the D-shaped top above a conforming skirt centering an oval within a mitred panel, and dies alternately inlaid with shells and urns, all with complex banding, square tapering herringbone-inlaid legs, ht. 29, wd. 35 3/4, dp. 17 1/2 in.
Note: An old handwritten note on the underside reads: "This table was made by my great grandfather Thos. Goddard, for his daughter, Susan, about the time of her marriage to my grandfather, Theophilus Topham, Nov 5 1808. It is one of a pair and used by my grandparents during their lives. Upon the death of my grandmother Topham in 1854 one table became the property of my aunt."
