Description:

Carved and Painted Suffragette Tobacconist Figure, Julius Theodore Melchers, Detroit, Michigan, c. 1890, the figure with carved blue- and white-painted dress wearing a round had with carved floral decoration, holding an open box of cigars, on a square pedestal base with cast iron wheels, old paint, ht. 70 in.

Provenance: Hill Gallery, Birmingham, Michigan, December 10, 1999.

Note: According to documentation included with the figure, it was used in a cigar store/tobacco store in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, and purchased by the Hill Gallery at an auction held at the store.
