Description:

Confederate Water Bottle, c. 1863, gourd-type bottle, carved near the top "W.H.FIELDS/Co F. 53. MVM/MAY 25. 1863/PORT HUDSON," with a rope around the waist, ht. 11 in.

Provenance: The collection of Nicholas A. Penachio.

Note: Private William H. Fields enlisted in Barre, Massachusetts, in Company F (Captain Mudge's) 53rd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry on October 17, 1862. On June 13th, 1863, the 53rd was ordered to assault Port Hudson. According to his service records, he was reduced to the ranks from color corporal as he refused to join his company into the assault.

Top of the bottle has some loss and there is a crack that goes about 3/4 of the way around the bottom.
