Federal Silver Eagle Plate by Charles Babbitt, c. 1806, engraved silver eagle, marked in the center "OA/1806," maker-marked on the back "C. BABBITT" with a single wire loop, in a wooden frame, marked on the back "J.A.K. from Agnes Rogers Allen, Feb. 22, 1958/It Belonged to Frederick Lewis Allen, & hung for/many years in 121 E. 35th St, N.Y.C. Library," eagle ht. 2 1/8, wd. 2 3/8 in.

Note: Frederick Lewis Allen was the editor of Harper's Weekly and a noted historian. This probably belonged to his great-grandfather, Otis Lee Allen, or Otis's brother, Oliver. Charles Babbitt was a silversmith and important clockmaker from Taunton, Massachusetts.
